24 nov Opening Tasman exhibition
Welcome aboard the Heemskerck, Abel Tasman’s discovery ship. Bureau Bretagne curated this exhibition – which is an extended (and translated) version of the one shown in Hobart earlier this year – on the request of the Abel Tasman Museum in the Netherlands and Museum Oranjehof in New Zealand.
The exhibition opened on November 24th, exactly 375 years since Abel Tasman first saw the coastline of Tasmania, which he baptized ‘Van Diemen’s Land’. Visitors are invited to join Abel Tasman and his crew on their 1642-1643 trip, which would put both Tasmania and New Zealand on the world map.
In both countries Tasman’s ‘expedition to the Unknown Southland’ will be commemorated and the exhibition at the Maritime Museum in Groningen was officially opened by the ambassador of New Zealand and the chancellor of the Australian embassy in the Netherlands.
The exhibition will run until mid-February at the Noordelijk Scheepvaartmuseum (Maritime Museum) in Groningen.
